i’ve been looking for a new church in evanston lately. i grew up in an awesome united methodist church and have been somewhat unsuccessfully searching for a “second” church for a while now. there’s just nothing like your home church, is there? i’ve been attending one in evanston for a while, but wanted to try something new. i found another umc near my apartment and decided to give it a shot. the church was pretty different than what i’m used to and not at all what i expected, but it was great!
for me, the meat and potatoes of church has always been the sermon. i love singing hymms, i love hearing the scripture lesson, i love the group prayer, but the sermon is my main event. i’ve been blessed to have three incredible pastors during my upbringing, each with a unique perspective, great sense of humor, and palpable spirituality. last sunday’s sermon did not disappoint! a member of the church who had been out of town for a while had returned and delivered an impromptu sermon about the importance of being thankful and remaining true to your faith and yourself. if you follow my facebook, i posted the overall theme a few days ago-
“i am not my situation, i am me.”
that quote has been swirling around in my head since the sermon and i’ve gotten a lot of feedback from some of my closest friends. glad it could make an impact on so many of you! it also inspired my musical choice for today’s post.
the avett brothers have quickly become one of my absolute favorite groups. i was first introduced to their music about a year and a half ago with the incredible track “murder in the city.” their music screams honesty to me. it’s genuine, it’s sweet, it’s simple, and i really love it. expect many posts on here with lots of their tracks!
“nothing short of thankful,” like many of their tracks, is just such a happy song. it lends itself so well to someone trying to live a good life in our modern day world. it often reminds me of someone taking a deep breath, walking with a purpose, and sticking to their guns!
“nothing’s gonna change my mind/i’m walking a different highway/nothing’s gonna change my mind/i’m traveling a different line, oh/nothing’s gonna change my mind/you’ll find what you need if you want it/nothing’s gonna change my mind/i’ll find mine”
what a great set of lyrics! honest, positive, confident- what else do ya need?
take a minute this week and thank somebody for something they did for you, whether that’s a parent, a friend, God, anyone. stay committed to your path. be positive! be thankful!
enjoy,
