everlast - what it's like

music isn't always supposed to make you feel good.  it expresses the full range of human emotion.  sometimes, it challenges you to look deep inside of yourself and reflect upon a sensitive subject.

everlast's "what it's like" is a dark song with a tragic story.  the sustained bass sounds and the d minor harmonies throughout represent the dark subject matter.  the repeated guitar tune almost sounds like someone faithlessly shaking their head.

i included a video with the lyrics because they're so powerful and should really be heard.  be warned, though, as there is adult language throughout.  the lines at the end of each verse always hit me like a bullet:

"god forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes/'cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues"
"god forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes/'cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose"
"god forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news/'cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose"

we can never really stop examining ourselves and trying to get better.  i try to lead a just life, but i can't honestly say that i am without judgement.  let this song be a reminder to all of us.

That song made me cry. I guess that's also why I always give something to beggars. Because I really don't know what it's like for them.
