welcome to part 2! as many composers have done before me, the 2nd movement of this friday symphony will be a slow movement. i've been wanting to put this song on the blog for a while now, but it's really hard to describe how it makes me feel in words. we'll see what happens.
wedding crashers is one of my favorite movies of all time. it's the ultimate movie! it has everything: great actors, an awesome storyline, hilarious jokes, amazing scenery, hip style, arguably the best opening scene in history (and not just because of diora baird and her.. eyes? yeah, eyes...), and basically everything else a great movie needs. what you wouldn't necessarily expect, though, is the heartbreaking scene above.
if you haven't seen the movie, owen wilson's character falls in love with rachel mcadams' character, who happens to be engaged to a total douche. throughout the movie, rachel's character starts to realize she's not in love with her fiancé and is sick of being treated poorly. this scene is the first time they almost act on their feelings. it opens with both of them lying awake in bed, going over the situation in their minds. owen tiptoes over to rachel's room and considers knocking on her door. even though he doesn't, rachel thinks she hears something and tiptoes herself over to owen's room. she barely taps on his door, which he notices, but attributes to his imagination's wishful-thinking.
"sparks" is the perfect song for this scene. it's neither happy or sad. it puts me in this very strange middle mood that only music can seem to do. everything just seems so honest. also, there's something about them both being barefoot that really works with the scene. the song sorta rocks you back and forth throughout, which is exactly what the scene does.
