yael naim - if i lost the best thing

painful beauty.

i feel like a voyeur listening to this song.  her soul is on display.  that's a pretty brave thing to do, ya know.

a few things are worth pointing out.  oh man, the way she sighs when she sings "i lost you" at :46?  sublime.  her wailing repetition of "it's over/it's all over" around 1:36 is probably the best example of the painful beauty in this song.  her voice is, on the surface, so warm, precise, and respectfully restrained.  she's heartbroken and yet still so musically polite.  maybe she's in disbelief.  maybe it hasn't hit her yet.  the way she tries to salvage what's been lost at 2:15... wow.  painful beauty.

quick edit: i remembered an awesome comment my aunt cindy made on a past post that is so true: "It is beautiful and emotional and sad all at the same time."  well said, aunt cindy!

remember the other day when i said i crave simplicity and beauty?  folks, i think we found it.  this music nourishes me- everything about it.  aural vitamins.

just a thought: "painful beauty" reminds me of a scene in mad men.  season 3, episode 3: joan and greg are hosting a dinner party with greg's colleagues and joan, depressed on the inside, is forced to smile and entertain the guests with her rendition of "c'est magnifique."  you can find that video here.

i love discovering new music.  thanks so much to D for sharing this one with me!

(i highly recommend you listen to this song either at a louder volume or with headphones.  it's too intimate to just casually listen.  the details are so important and we live in a noisy world.)

enjoy,
