scrubs is one of my favorite shows of all time, for so many reasons. if you ask me, jd & turk’s relationship has to be the best on-screen relationship since tim robbins and morgan freeman in “shawshank redemption.” (fun fact: it turns out they really are best friends in real life!) it also has that perfect combination of funny moments and what i call “girlfriend,” or sentimental moments, always managing to stay sincere throughout the wackiest scenarios. it has amazing guest stars, too, like john ritter, tom cavanaugh, heather graham, brendan fraser, and so many others. ahh, i love scrubs! i could write all night about it, but i’ll quit while i’m ahead and get to the music (and video, this time!).
i was thinking about scrubs tonight because zach braff logged on to reddit (which can be found at http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/ktdm5/i_ama_zach_braff/) and answered a whole bunch of questions. not surprisingly, a lot of people asked about his taste in music and applauded him for using such great music in all of his productions. his response?
“If I’m decent at anything, perhaps its [sic] placing the right song with the right moment.”
that you are, zach. there have been tons and tons of great songs paired with great scenes during scrubs’ run, and i’ve discovered a lot of my favorite songs just by watching the show. of all of them, my favorite has got to be “dreaming of you” by the coral coupled with one of elliot and jd’s first make out sessions. get it, jd!
the scene is everything you’d expect from a jd-elliot hook up scene- awkward, nerdy, passionate, sweet, and sexy. this clip is actually a great summary of jd’s transformation through the entire series. it starts with him being his typical nice, somewhat shy self before realizing he is capable of getting what he wants and becoming more confident. sure, he’s sloppy, but he’s making it happen and that’s a big step for him!
the song just fits with this scene so well. it really reinforces the improvisatory, i-can’t-believe-this-is-actually-happening theme of the scene. if you watch closely, the song actually gives away what’s about to happen! the lyrics fit, too-
“i still need you, but/i don’t want you now”
any scrubs fan will tell you that jd and elliot both feel exactly that many times. as for zach braff’s timing of music and visuals, check out 1:21-1:27. what a perfect musical and visual build up! ”oh yeah!”
sometimes i wonder if i would like this song as much if it wasn’t so connected to this scene. i’m really not sure, but that’s the beauty of integrating music with other media! some might even say that a pairing actually brings out the best in music… “dreaming of you” and the hot jd-elliot love scene is a perfect example of a symbiotic artistic relationship. take a peek at the video and grab the song on spotify. and, most of all,
enjoy,
