ludacris is, by far, my favorite rapper.
if i had to describe luda in one word, i think it would have to be cool. look at that glass he has right at the beginning of the song: amazing. the sunglasses he's wearing in the sports bar scene are so baller. the dude definitely has the cool look going. can you tell how much i like luda? i haven't even talked about his flow yet!
speaking of his flow, it's ridiculous. he constantly finds new ways to keep his lyrics fresh. he's really quite clever. rappers really are expert lyricists, and luda has got to be one of the best. i'm always amazed the way he hears certain words and the way he can rethink them. for example, in the line
"stroll through the front door headed to the v.i.p., brought a couple bottles and i took a couple sips"
he rethinks v.i.p. and literally pronounces it like "vip" to rhyme with "sip." how do you even come up with something like that? the rhyming schemes he utilizes are so cool and complex. the first section he keeps it pretty standard. at 1:41, though, he flips it around a little with this part:
"woke up the next morning and i all can remember/was takin' shots and tippin' the bartender/surrendered to the woman and her bringin' me home/cause she started lookin' better every shot of patron YUP"
the rhyme is set up, then turned completely around right before he introduces a new one. he even throws in that "yup" to sorta complete the sound you hear after the word "remember." it does double duty as a little preview to him saying "up" just a couple seconds later. nice!
one of my favorite things about luda is his comical inflection. he has the coolest way of pronouncing things! to me, it almost sounds like a little kid. i love the way he says anything that starts with a "b," like in
"a nice round butt and a pair of double ds"
haha, it's just too cool! he sounds like he's having so much fun when he does stuff like that. his rhythm is so commanding and it sounds completely natural. nothing is forced or contrived, it just happens to be the only way that it could possibly be. it just sounds right!
"hikin' up your skirts, climbin' up your shirts, it's mr. late night luda and i like to flirt"
the video i included is a clean version with a bit of an extra story layered on top. i dig it! i'm not much of a swear word kind of guy myself, but i do think there is something to be said about experiencing art in its intended form. the original version can be found on spotify or on youtube here.
i would highly recommend checking out all of luda's work. he's one of my favorite artists and has a wide range of amazing tracks.
enjoy,
