michael parks - just a closer walk with thee

short post, short song!

i’m a big fan of kevin smith’s movies.  his latest, red state, is a great horror flick: a tense satire on extreme right wing fundamentalist groups.  the film begins with three high school best buddies responding to an online adult advertisement.   the ad turns out to be a fake and the three kids are abducted by a (much worse) westboro baptist church-type organization and taken to a rural church.  the head pastor of the compound is terrifyingly portrayed by michael parks.  i haven’t seen acting this good in a long, long time.  his character is cool, calm, and horrifying.  i’d recommend the movie if you’re looking
for a truly creepy movie.  a heads up, though- it’s pretty graphic.

“just a closer walk with thee” plays during the final credits.  i’m sure smith means it to be a bit sarcastic (if you watch the movie, you’ll see why), but i’m going to talk about the song just as a song.

parks’ performance is so refreshingly natural.  there’s no auto tune.  there are a few pitch inaccuracies.  there a missed notes here and there.  and you know what?  it’s GREAT!  what a pleasure it is to hear something REAL.

i love the old hymns.  take a listen to this, check out the movie, keep it real, and, of course,

enjoy,
