as i hope you've figured out by now, i try to give a good variety of stuff here on the blog. i try to balance the fast with the slow, the light with the heavy, the loud with the soft, and the well-knowns with the lesser-knowns. i'm sure that many of you know at least some version of today's song, but i think it's important to mention.
what can i even write about a song like this? sure, i'm a trained student of music who could offer up an analys of all sorts of stuff, but i feel like there comes a point where beauty is beauty. i will, however, offer a few thoughts.
first of all, buckley's version is a cover of a song written by leonard cohen. the original version can be found @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3Fkuq5Lf0Q&feature=related. another popular version is sung by rufus rainwright for the movie "shrek" and can be found @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR0DKOGco_o. which version do you prefer? do you wish you could combine certain aspects of each performance into a new version? i'd love to hear what you think.
i really enjoy covers/remixes/alternate versions of music. there is definitely something to be said about the "original," but i love hearing different takes on a common theme. it's like all of the amazing renaissance artists who offered their interpretations of common subjects. there is so much to be learned from different viewpoints and so much great music to hear!
i love the word hallelujah. it has become a word that can mean many different things. in the context of this song, it certainly means greatly different things in each stanza, but the one i like the most is a vocal representation of encountering something really special- the way your eyes light up when you see a loved one you haven't seen in a while, the way you sleep after an amazing day, or the way that something can be so beautiful that tears well up in your eyes.
"every breath we drew was hallelujah"
geeze, here i said i couldn't hardly write anything about this song and i feel like i just wrote a book. quick, quit reading and listen to the songs! remember the word hallelujah this week, whatever it means to you, and notice the amazing things happening around you on a daily basis.
hallelujah!
enjoy,

Thanks for this one, kyle. Love this song...standing in the kitchen making tuna helper, listening to mike listening to his ut basketball game online, dogs running at my feet....you allowed me to have my own little hallelujah moment :) love u!
one of my favorites of all time...your comments brought tears to my eyes, made me think of so many hallelujah moments in my life. Love you!
what jess and susie said...there are really no words that can explain the feelings this song brings up....not always the same feelings each time i hear the song...it's just so incredibly beautiful and it makes me happy (and sometimes sad) to remember all of my hallelujah moments so far in my life. and i agree with you about just loving the word. thanks, kyle!
